More than two years after his death Jackie Wilson had his first and only number 1. Reet petite which had originally been released 29 years before hit the top spot following the track featuring in a commercial for levis jeans. At the time this became a record for the length of time a record took to get to number one number one, this record is now held by Tony Christie and Amarillo.

The first exclusive number one of 1987 was also the first house music tune to get to pole position. Steve silk Hurley helped to create the chicago house sound that evolved into acid house and was to kick start the rave culture of the late 80s and early 90's. With the end of wham George Michael was waiting for soul diva Aretha Franklin to produce the 80s disco classic I knew you were waiting.

Another old timer back in the charts was Ben E King with stand by me. This tune which was originally released back in 1961 and back then only just scrapped into the top thirty at number 27. The re issue hit the top spot after it was made the theme tune to a film written by steven king called stand by me, what a coincidence. For us the low point of the year was the firms star trekkin and this tune makes it into our pop flops of the 80s. Despite it being number one for what at the time seemed like ages this tune did not work in a party and would always cause a walk off. The only time when you could get away with this one was at primary school discos and party's for kids. So if you are now coming up your 30th birthday this might bring back fond memories, you should be ashamed of yourself.
